The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.
CERT volunteers were called up when needed after the Gulf oil spill.  During the weekend of April 30, 2010, the Escambia County, Fla. CERT assisted in the management of a volunteer cleanup aimed at removing debris from Pensacola and Perdido beaches, in case any oil does seep onto its shores.

The Belmont, Mass. CERT recently came to the aid of their community during a water emergency by helping distribute bottled water to local residents. The emergency was the result of a broken water main that left 2.5 million people in 30 jurisdictions without a fresh supply of water.
Our neighborhoods are organized and currently have approximately eighty trained CERT members.  In the event of a disaster they will stage at the nearest LDS church.  The organizational chart on the back of the newsletter shows how the organization is structured.  Block Captains are critical in this process by reporting emergencies to those stationed at the churches.  The Incident Commander will then determine needs and resources to respond efficiently.
To be a member of CERT you can take classes offered by the Unified Fire Authority.  To register online or see class schedules go to:
or wait till the beginning of the year where a neighborhood course will be provided by the UFA.
